Community Guidelines
Last updated: 2026-05-16T00:00:00.000Z
YOYO exists to help people in Australia find their people — through real-world activities. These Guidelines describe the conduct we expect from everyone who uses the App, both online and at activities organised through it. By using YOYO you agree to follow these Guidelines together with our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
We apply these Guidelines consistently. Breaking them can lead to content removal, warnings, restrictions on creating or joining activities, account suspension, or permanent ban — depending on severity, history, and context.
1. Respect Each Other
YOYO is for meeting people, not putting them down. Do not:
- Harass, bully, threaten, intimidate, or stalk anyone
- Post hate speech or content that vilifies or demeans a person or group based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or other protected characteristic
- Send unwanted sexual messages or images, including in private chat
- “Out” anyone or share private information about them without consent
These rules align with the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth), the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and the eSafety Commissioner’s standards under the Online Safety Act 2021 (Cth).
2. Be Who You Say You Are
- Use your real name or a recognisable name your friends would know — not someone else’s identity
- Use a recent photo of yourself as your profile picture
- Don’t impersonate other people, brands, or organisations
- One person, one account. Don’t create multiple accounts to evade restrictions or inflate participation
3. Organise Safe, Honest Activities
If you create an activity:
- Describe what will actually happen — date, location, cost, what people should bring, who can join
- Don’t post fake activities or use the platform to lure people into unsafe situations
- Disclose any commercial element (paid tickets, sponsorships, lead generation) up front
- Take reasonable care for participants’ safety: pick public, accessible meeting points; share emergency contact info if the activity has real risk; respect any access needs people raise
If you join an activity:
- Show up, or cancel early enough that the host can plan
- Follow the host’s reasonable instructions at the activity
- Pay your share when an activity uses bill splitting
4. Content That Doesn’t Belong on YOYO
You may not post, share, or organise activities involving:
- Sexually explicit content, nudity, or content that sexualises minors in any way
- Graphic violence, self-harm, or content that promotes or glorifies either
- Sale or promotion of illegal drugs, weapons that require a licence you cannot show, or other goods restricted under Australian law
- Content that promotes terrorism, violent extremism, or organised crime
- Content depicting or instructing how to commit crimes
- Misleading health, financial, or legal claims (Australian Consumer Law applies — don’t make claims you can’t back up)
- Spam, scams, phishing, or unsolicited commercial promotion
- Content that infringes someone else’s copyright, trademark, or other intellectual property
If we are required to act under the Online Safety Act 2021 (Cth) — for example, in response to a removal notice from the eSafety Commissioner — we will.
5. Respect Others’ Privacy
- Do not share another user’s personal information (full name, address, phone, employer, location data) without their permission
- Photos and videos taken at YOYO activities should respect the people in them. If someone asks you to take their image down, do it
- Do not record private conversations without consent
- Do not use information you obtain through YOYO (member lists, contact details) for marketing, recruiting, or any purpose unrelated to the activity
6. Keep Minors Safe
- You must be at least 13 years old to use YOYO
- Adults must not direct sexual content at minors, attempt to meet minors privately, or use the platform to groom minors. We report suspected child sexual exploitation material to law enforcement and the eSafety Commissioner
- Activities listed for adults only (e.g. licensed venues, alcohol-focused events) must be marked appropriately and must not admit minors
7. No Illegal Activity
Do not use YOYO to plan, promote, or carry out anything that breaks Australian law — federal, state, or local. This includes (without limitation) drug supply, unlicensed firearms, organised theft, fraud, sexual offences, and human trafficking.
8. Reporting and Enforcement
If you see something that breaks these Guidelines:
- Use the in-app report button on the user, activity, message, or photo
- Tell us what happened — context helps us act faster
- In an emergency or where someone is at immediate risk, contact local emergency services (000 in Australia) first
When we receive a report we will review it, weigh the context, and take action proportionate to the breach. Possible actions include warning the user, removing content, restricting features, suspending the account, banning the account, and — where appropriate — referring the matter to law enforcement, the eSafety Commissioner, or another regulator.
If your account is actioned and you believe we got it wrong, you can appeal by contacting us at the address below. We aim to respond within 14 days.
9. When Australian Law Applies to You
These Guidelines work alongside Australian law. Some specific points:
- Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles govern how personal information is handled — see our Privacy Policy
- Online Safety Act 2021 (Cth) gives the eSafety Commissioner powers to require removal of cyberbullying material, image-based abuse, and other harmful content. We comply with valid notices
- Australian Consumer Law applies to commercial conduct on the platform — don’t mislead, don’t make false claims, honour what you advertise
- State and territory laws on alcohol, gambling, public assembly, and protected areas apply to activities held in those jurisdictions — it’s the host’s responsibility to comply
10. How These Guidelines Change
We may update these Guidelines as the platform evolves and as Australian law changes. Material changes will be announced through the App and the “Last Updated” date will move. Continuing to use YOYO after a change means you accept the updated Guidelines.
